Presented by Susan Courtney, actress, director, theatre professor
Community Room, 3rd Floor

Ms. Courtney speaks about Mary Cassatt and her journey to become a professional artist in a strict academic system that was opposed to women artists.

Courtney also talks about her own play, “Girl in Blue Armchair”, which portrays Cassatt’s struggle to be an American artist in Paris in the late 1880’s, as well as the influence of her family and her mentor, Edgar Degas, on Cassatt’s life and art.
